A Wrinkle In Time 50 Years, 50 Days, 50 Blogs Tour

I was thrilled to be asked to participate in the 50 Years, 50 Days, 50 Blogs Tour in celebration of the 50th anniversary of A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle.

My illustration for the 50 Blog Tour focuses on my favourite characters in the book, Meg and Mrs Who, Mrs Which and Mrs Whatsit. Including an ant demonstrating travelling through the 5th Dimension and the main purpose of the story, to rescue Meg's father from the dark planet Camazotz.

I read A Wrinkle in Time as a young teenager and have loved it ever since. During my illustration degree I created a small book called 'Tesseracting' based on the tesseracting theory described in a Wrinkle in Time.

Keep Your Chin Up and Smile! Greeting Cards

Recently while browsing through greeting cards in a card shop I noticed howsamey and cliché the cards were. I particularly couldn't find a good 'Get WellSoon' card. So I thought I'd design some myself.

Years ago I bought a postcard (last photograph) from a vintage shop inBrighton, since then it’s always been placed above my desk, and every time Ilook at it, it makes me smile. I love the words ‘Keep Your Chin Up and Smile’they are good, encouraging words.

I’ve used these words for my card designs, making three different designs Icouldn’t decide on one, and created all three.

Studio Number Six Book

Recently I purchased studionumbersix's new book 'Rose'

It's a beautiful little book, the story is sweet and simple and leaves me with thoughts of my own memories and what items I treasure. Illustrations compliment the text with mysterious and subtle drawings. Along with the book comes a beautiful print of a flower, the red ink is scented (the reason why will be become clear when you read the book).

I am proud to add this little treasure to my book collection and will be following with interest what else Studionumbersix produces in the future.

side note: I came across studionumbersix through Alexandra Higlett's blog. Her work is gorgeous and I really want to buy her 2012 calendar for the new year Silkscreen printed 2012 Calendar for romantics

The Museum of Everything

During September I volunteered at the Museum of Everything #4 exhibition in Selfridges on Oxford Street. It was an incredible experience, being able to examine the artwork more thoroughly then just looking around the exhibition once, meeting people who are really enthusiastic about the work and working with people from all different backgrounds of the art world.

The Museum of Everything exhibits artwork made by Outsider artists aka Art Brut. These are artists who are untrained; they've never been to art school and produce artwork for themselves, not for a client or gallery. I have been fascinated and in awe of this type of artwork since visiting New York's American Folk Art Museum and discovering the artwork of Henry Darger, an artist whose work I wrote my university dissertation on. I have visited most of the MofE's exhibitions, mainly the ones in Primrose Hill. This exhibition was different from previous as it represented the artwork of lesser known artists, from around the world.

Surprisingly when I watched the videos of the artists I recognised the people in the CEC La Hesse video! During my Erasmus exchange at university my Illustration class from Sint Lucas Gent visited CEC La Hesse for a few days in Vielsalm and we were able to work alongside the artists while they produced their work. Unfortunately I was not able to communicate well with them (besides many Bonjours) as I don't speak French. But the atmosphere and facilities were wonderful and a inspiring environment for any creative person.

Cats I Know

Guess what I received?! Kaori Mitsushima's 'Cat's I know' zine! (I bought this as a birthday present for a friend but I couldn't help to have a sneaky peek, shhh)

It arrived beautifully packaged, with a sweet little note. Lovely handwriting.

Cats I Know is such a sweet little zine filled with cats galore. The little step guide to uses of a scarf for cats made me smile. I love the style the cats have been drawn, my fave cat is the Audrey Hepburn style cat with pearls and gloves.

I made the pattern up myself, knitting four stitches and then purling four to create a layered texture.

During my internship at Hand and Eye I was able to print some of my own things. Above is a series of zines I'm planning to illustrate, I had fun printing the front covers with letterpress. Quite like the planets one, I included 8 planets because I feel sorry for Pluto being kicked out of the main planet category.

Letterpressing

This was my piece of writing I set at Hand and Eye. After learning and practising dissing I chose Gill Sans pt 8 and set the above text. Something that I thought would be easy to do, but soon found out it is extremely complex. It was probably over 10 attempts before I satisfactorily had completed the setting, only to find that after to showing it to many people there were loads of mistakes! Some Gill Light had manged to get into the Gill Sans tray and I forgot to space the CAPITAL letters (just a few of my mistakes!). Also the spacing I found difficult to get just perfect, some lines would be tight, while others would be wobbly. Even now you can see that there are two different types of 1's in the font, but I like imperfection. Definitely learnt a lot and was a great experience!

Letterpress internship

I recently was able to do a two week internship at the Hand and Eye Letterpress company. It was a great opportunity to learn how letterpress works and more about the different types of typography. Unfortunately most of the photos I took (I was using my Diana film camera) didn't develop well, most were blank. Even though I bought film that could be used inside! But I managed to get a few photographs, this one of the printing presses has quite an interesting quality.

Today I received Sova Magazine in the post!
I found out about this lovely little magazine from Johanna Tagada's blog http://www.bonjourjohanna.com/
It is an independent magazine that only prints 250 copies per issue, featuring photographers, illustrators and other creatives.
Included was a gorgeous poster which I am immediently going to pin above my bed, 'Sleep Solves Everything'. Stickers and a mini poster are a sweet little bonus as well.
I really recommend getting a copy!

My work is now being displayed in Bury St Edmunds and Norwich- I'm taking over East Anglia!

In Norwich Making Space is displaying three pieces of my work at the EPIC broadcast production house. Making Space is a wonderful idea to provide exhibtion venues to local artists. Have a look at their website to see the other artists that are participating.

In Bury St Edmunds I have entered my work into a gallery called Cavern 4, a charity gallery whose vision is that people with mental health problems to have the same employment opportunities as everyone else, and to be able to command the same wages. I am very pleased that they have excepted my work, and that I am able to support a charity with my artwork.

Some friends went travelling and brought me back an old brownie hawkeye! It's one of the most thoughtful presents I've had for a while, and I'm very excited about starting to use it. I found out that you can use 120 film in it. So I'll bid for some on ebay and start shooting.

My goal is to post something every day this week. I love reading blogs and feel that I should dive in and make this blog something enjoyable to regularly read. So here goes...
The window ledge behind my desk has temporarily become an art gallery. I've framed six pieces of my work, three pieces are going into a exhibition and the other three will be displayed in an art gallery.
The work looks really professional now, I kind of want to keep them all. But I hope they do well in being bought and showing themselves in other peoples houses.

Send a postcard, get a postcard.

Bought 160 PG tips teabags for 7 euros! Expensive but worth it. When I went to the flee market I found a pile of Life magazines, picked these three out. I love the 'lazy life of a slow loris' and the children special edition, the koala illustrations are gorgeous.

Redecorated the fireplace, covered up the strange pineapple and hung the beautiful birds Eilidh made me. Also hung my jewelry on the many nails available. Went to Ikea last week to get some bits and bobs, bought the candles from there. Loving the 'a single man' postcard, I went to see it yesterday with some friends, was beautiful.
